Romer Young Gallery, in collaboration with Galerie Axel Obger, Berlin is pleased to announce
the opening of a two person exhibition with San Francisco artists KIRK STOLLER and JAMES STERLING PITT
The exhibition opens in Berlin on Friday, July 8th, 7pm.
Connection and support are consistent themes within Kirk Stoller's work. Stoller's exhibition at Galerie Axel Obiger, I Will Stay Erect, reflects "the difficulty of remaining upright against the rapid onslaught of change we confront in our daily lives: personal, societal, economic, technological. It is overwhelming, and indeed at times can seem impossible to withstand. That's when we lean on the pressure points for balance and, by virtue of our weight and stubbornness, remain erect to face another onslaught, which may require another adjustment, a shift in balance, new points of connection."
James Sterling Pitt's work on view at Galerie Axel Obiger represents a series that was inspired by Gil Scott Heron, an American soul and jazz poet. Heron passed away the day Pitt sequenced the sculptures for the exhibition in Berlin. Pitt writes: "He has been a subject in several earlier drawings and a long time inspiration. His most recent album is entitled I'm New Here. This title is a reference to a song by Bill Callahan, another subject and inspiration in my work. While sequencing the new sculptures, I began thinking of each piece as a musical note and the grouping of them as a song. Together, the four sculptures in the show exist as a harmony. I chose to title the sculptures Untitled (I'm New Here 1-4) as an elegy to Gil Scott Heron; it is an attempt to transfer my feelings of his passing into an arrangement of works that exist like a song stuck in your head, one that you can remember the melody and only a few words. The title also refers to the autobiographical nature of my work. This being my first show in Berlin, the statement I'm New Here takes on a humble uncertainty as well as a potential and a sense of humor."
