Romer Young Gallery is pleased to announce, Perfumed Garden, its fourth solo exhibition with New York-based artist Ryan Wallace. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, June 8th, from 6-8pm.
Wallace continues to push his mixed media paintings to conjure an ethereal space between the material and immaterial. The seven new paintings in Perfumed Garden delve deep into shape, line, color and composition while allowing the formal qualities to give way to interpretations that hint at the natural world. Wallace excavates the surface, adding texture and complexity to planes of painted, dyed, cut and inlaid canvas and linen. Reflected light glows from within, captured between fissures of aluminum and copper embedded in the artist’s painterly strata. Shapes appear to repeat, rotate, invert, evolve and flit from one canvas to the next. The synthesis of luminescence, shape and material in Wallace’s work ultimately becomes the wellspring that initiates his self-perpetuating, self-sustaining, and self-determined process. These new paintings are fluid and intuitive, beautiful and raw.
